Heather Wurtele takes 2nd with the fastest bike split at Ironman Lake Stevens 70.3
It was a last minute decision to enter the Lake Stevens 70.3 Ironman as Wurtele’s passport renewal arrived just the morning before she was set to head to Washington. When her 2010 Rolf Prima TT58 wheels arrived just days beforehand , she decided it was a sign. With a not so strong start, Wurtele exited the water with over two minutes to make up on the leaders. A quick transition to the bike leg; Wurtele was determined to make up the lost ground. Passing riders on her TT58’s, Wurtele quickly made up the needed time by having the fastest bike split of the day, giving her a 26-second lead on Becky Lavelle going into the run. Lavelle who held the lead out of the water was now on Wurtele’s heels. The two went neck and neck throughout the first half of the run. With five kilometers to go, Lavelle was able to pull away from Wurtele, taking the lead and winning. Wurtele crossed only 68-seconds behind Lavelle taking second for the day.
Wurtele's focus continues to be on her training for Kona. The Ironman World Championship is fast approaching with less than two months away.
